Dream Sister ∞ Laura Miano

Meet this month’s Dream Sister, Laura Miano, Naarm/Melbourne-based Sexologist and Co-founder of Posmo — a sex toy concept store offering a curated selection of pleasure and sexual health products.

Posmo was founded on the basis to offer a safe and inclusive space to explore and discover sexual curiosities and sexual identity. While looking to queer theory, a sociological theory that argues against the use of traditional sexual orientation systems, Posmo champions this concept and its recognition that every person is sexually unique and embraces all sexual orientations.

At Posmo’s helm is Laura, an incredible force whose mission is to help those with sexual concerns as well as support individuals who might like to enhance their sex lives beyond cultural norms.Sister Studios x Laura Miano from Posmo

Q: What is your full name?

A: Laura Christina Miano

Q: What does work mean to you and what do you do?

A: I’m a sex therapist and the founder of sex toy store Posmo.
For me, work is so incredibly important! I feel so lucky to have a job that inspires, helps and educates people. I’ve had so many people tell me I’ve changed their life or they’ve had the best sex of their life from the advice I gave them. Such a special thing to hear… it never gets old!

Q: Tell us a dream you’ve made come true?

A: My career! Before I started studying, working as a sexologist felt like such a distant dream. It feels surreal to be a fully qualified sex therapist now, own my own sex toy store, and have people even stopping me on the street to thank me for the work I do. It lived up to the dream and more!!

Q: How do you unwind?

A: A few ways - listening to ambient music, taking a bath, sitting at my window daydreaming, writing in my journal, interpretive dancing or doing a full-body masturbation meditation, obviously.

Q: How do you wind up?

A: Number one would be listening to music and dancing. I love techno, trance and gangster rap and on most days I’ll pump this kind of music ridiculously loud and have a silly dance session on my own. I can honestly make the best dance party :’)

Q: What can friends count on you for?

A: Advice, getting up to mischief, and glamming up.

Q: What does the word 'sisterhood' mean to you?

A: Supporting the women around you, acknowledging the shared struggles of fem people while also understanding and acknowledging the different layers of those struggles with intersectionality. The main word that comes to mind when I think of sisterhood is safety.

Q: What does your dream house look like?

A: A modernist house with polished concrete floors, floor to ceiling windows, and surrounded by lush, green plants. There’s lots of glass, metal and leather furniture with occasional timber to add warmth. Along with fluffy rugs and pillows, cashmere blankets, and soft, plush seating to add comfort. It’s sexy and sleek but still super cozy. It’s basically the kind of house you want to chill in, host in and fuck in.

Q: What’s baking in your oven or your specialty dish?

A: I love making my grandmother’s (Nonna’s) wild fennel pasta. She’s Sicilian and it’s such a blessing to be able to recreate the recipes she brought over from Italy.

Q: Favorite food?

A: Anything pickled

Q: Describe your favourite piece of clothing and why?

A: My Raga Malak Zida top - it’s a beautiful lace long sleeve blouse with asymmetrical flared sleeves and a super low neckline. I love layering it under dresses and other tops and it’s my favourite piece at the moment because it’s the perfect mix of fem, sexy and drama.

Q: How do you keep a healthy mind, body and soul?

A: Eating well, going to the gym 3x a week, going for long walks most days, having strong relationships with my friends and family, always making room for fun and adventure, dancing and, of course, prioritising pleasure and eroticism!!

Q: Your most memorable holiday?

A: Over 2017 and 2018, I traveled Europe, North and South America, and SouthEast Asia. I ended my trip on a remote island in the Philippines and ended up staying there for 10 months. It was such an incredible experience.

Q: Ocean or desert?

A: Ocean, as long as I’m on the beach, layered up in (SPF) oil, sipping on a cocktail and being fabulous.

Q: Apertif or digestif?

A: Digestif, that’s when the fun starts ;)

Q: Sunrise or sunset?

A: Ask me Monday to Friday, I’ll say sunrise. Ask me on the weekends, I’ll say sunset. I LOVE early starts on my work weeks but I live for my night’s out, frolicking about on my weekends.

Q: Dance party or dinner party?

A: Oh this is such a hard one! Hosting a dinner party is one of my favourite things to do, but my dinner parties always turn into dance parties so I’m going to have to choose both.

Q: What’s on your bedside table?

A: My Posmo lube bottle - it’s so sexy and sleek, a vintage blue fluorescent lamp, and incense.

Q: What is the first album you ever bought?

A: Probably Ministry of Sound or So Fresh lol

Q: What are you listening to now?

A: Gangsta Boo! She’s my gangster rap queen at the moment.

Q: The best piece of advice you have ever been given?

A: Dream outrageously big. If you hope to achieve the kinds of things that other people wouldn’t expect of you, you’re already closer to getting there because you've added it to your world of possibilities. That is super important on an unconscious level!
